Thermal Experiments for Fractured Rock Characterization: Theoretical Analysis and Inverse Modeling

چکیده

Field-scale properties of fractured rocks play crucial role in many subsurface applications, yet methodologies for identification the statistical parameters a discrete fracture network (DFN) are scarce. We present an inversion technique to infer two such parameters, density and fractal dimension, from cross-borehole thermal experiments data. It is based on particle-based heat-transfer model, whose evaluation accelerated with deep neural (DNN) surrogate that integrated into grid search. The DNN trained small number model runs, predicts cumulative function field. latter used compute fine posterior distributions (to-be-estimated) parameters. Our synthetic reveal well constrained by data, while dimension harder determine. Adding non-uniform prior information related DFN connectivity improves inference this parameter.

Inverse modeling of flow tomography experiments in fractured media

[1] The accurate characterization of the location, hydraulic properties, and connectivity of major fracture zones is essential to model flow and solute transport in fractured media. Cross-borehole flowmeter tests, which consist of measuring changes in vertical borehole flows when pumping a neighboring borehole, were shown to be an efficient technique to provide information on the properties of ...

Modeling capillary barriers in unsaturated fractured rock

[1] This work presents a series of numerical modeling studies that investigate the hydrogeologic conditions required to form capillary barriers and the effect that capillary barriers have on fluid flow and tracer transport processes in the unsaturated fractured rock of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, a potential site for storing high-level radioactive waste. The modeling approach is based on a dual-con...

Numerical probabilistic analysis for slope stability in fractured rock masses using DFN-DEM approach

Due to existence of uncertainties in input geometrical properties of fractures, there is not any unique solution for assessing the stability of slopes in jointed rock masses. Therefore, the necessity of applying probabilistic analysis in these cases is inevitable. In this study a probabilistic analysis procedure together with relevant algorithms are developed using Discrete Fracture Network-Dis...

Inverse Modeling of Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs Using Pressure Interference Data

Numerically inverting simultaneous pressureinterference measurements from multiple observation wells can help to establish the large-scale spatial distributions of permeability and storage within a geothermal reservoir. For realistic results, it is important to incorporate double-porosity (MINC) descriptions into the modeling process to properly reproduce the short-term pressure-transient respo...
